How do you know which photographer to use on your wedding day? That is a common question couples ask because it is difficult to decide with all the different photographers out there today. However, here are 5 easy tips to determine whether that photographer is the right fit for you.
1. Don’t hire a friend
This is a common occurrence we see at our weddings. Your friend may be an amazing photographer, but they will be too busy having fun at your wedding to be capturing the moments. You don’t want them partying it up and then you have no pictures to remember your reception by. The day will come and go, but the pictures will last forever. It is a big deal to make sure that you have the special moments of your day captured to look back on years down the road.
2. You decide who takes pictures
Some photographers tell their couples that they will not allow other people to take professional photos or even smartphone photos. Know that this decision is up to you, not your photographer. If they want to be picky about allowing other people to take photos, then examine why that may be the case. Are they insecure about their own work? Even if they are just making this rule up, remember that if you want others taking pictures then that is up to you. If not, then great. BUT the decision is yours because you are the one paying them. Take your vendors advice, but don’t let them take over.
3. They should be unnoticeable
Your photographers should capture the special moments of your day in stealth mode. Make sure to read their reviews to hear what previous clients have said about them. If they have a number of bad reviews, then go with someone else. There are several great photographers out there that are extremely talented. Check out their reviews and make sure they match what you are looking for in a photographer.
4. Check out their social media
A lot of photographers feature their work on their Instagram and Facebook pages. It is good to check out their gallery on their website, but also check out their social media pages to see photos that may not be on their website. It is easy to scroll through their social media posts to see what kind of work they do, but also you can get ideas for the type of photos you would like taken on your wedding day.
5. Make sure you enjoy their company
You will be spending a lot of time with your photographer throughout the entire wedding process. Sometimes you will have the same photographer for your engagement photos as your ceremony and reception. It is crucial you get along with that person because it is an important day and they will be by your side the entire time. So if you think “oh I will just have Lucy do my photos because I don’t really like her, but I have to invite her to the wedding,” then you are making a mistake. Be sure when making your final decision on who will be your photographer, you like their personality as well as their work. The Knot writes, "the more comfortable the two of you are with your photographer, the better the photos will turn out."
